Lumiere’s Lament

Chapter 1
                                       “Fifi”

It couldn’t be possible. Couldn’t be true! She would never say those words. But she did. Without any regret or guilt. She said it so easily. Pierced him right through the heart. Fifi was leaving him. Really leaving him! The bags she was carrying held all her belongings. She was leaving the castle to live with another man, down at the small, boring town Belle used to live! Fifi said she needed a “real man”…whatever that meant.
Lumiere tried pinching himself, slapping himself, even going so far as to bite his tongue until it went numb, just to see if he was in some horrible nightmare. Fifi was gone…leaving his shattered heart on the polished, marble floor. Nothing could possibly make the former enchanted candelabra feel better again. The once glowing charm that had every woman running to him, slowly began to fade to grey. “This is the end of me.” Lumiere whispered to himself after he watched Fifi go with that other man…a man that was not him!
Lumiere knew things would never be the same in the castle again, and so did everyone else. Especially Cogsworth, the butler.  “Ummm, Lumiere?” he asked, reaching a comforting hand to the Frenchman.
“I-I’m going to be up in my room for a while.” Lumiere said quickly, running up the stairs. Cogsworth watched him, not knowing what to do.
“You’ll be coming for dinner, won’t you?” But Lumiere did not here him sense he had already gotten into his room and locked the door.
“Just like zat…” Lumiere said shakily, sitting down on his bed and holding his head. “After only three days of being human again. Zis can’t be happening!” he screamed to himself, pulling at his hair. “Zings were zupposed to get better, not worse!” the once bright look in his eyes dimmed out as he sulked and slowly fell into despair. Lumiere ran his fingers down his face, as if expecting it to still be made of wax. Now he was human again, yes, but he would so easily give it up or anything to be with Fifi again.
But it became apparent that the only thing he was giving up at the moment was his sanity.
Cogsworth sighed, scratching his head. “My, my…what can I do? He’s been up there for over five hours!” he grumbled, staring down at his pocket watch. “The Master and Belle should already know of this, but it won’t hurt to remind them.” The butler hurried off, “and some people still have chores to do!”
For three days Lumiere stayed in his room, never leaving it. He didn’t even eat, nor sleep! The Frenchman’s mind kept swimming with memories of Babette. With her beautiful moonlight eyes and dazzling smile…her splendid body. What was wrong with him? What was it that made her cringe and leap away in his presence? Was it his breath? No, couldn’t possibly be! He brushed at least three times a day after every meal! He was clean! Was his charm just not working anymore? Or was it just that he was another boy toy for her to play with?
“No! She is not like zat! It must be zomezing else…” Lumiere pondered, his tired eyelids drooping. Stomach growling so loudly he hardly heard the door being knocked on. “Go away.” he droned, laying flat on the bed, groaning.
“Open this door this instant, Lumiere! If you haven’t noticed,” shouted Cogsworth, “You’ve been in there for almost three whole days! Open this or I’ll unlock the bloody thing myself!”
“Hold you horses, mon ami.” Lumiere said tiredly, getting up and dragging himself to the door and undoing the latches. Opening it, Lumiere gazed dazedly at the butler who looked quite displeased and shocked by his appearance. It appeared Lumiere began to grow some stubbles over the past few days, grown scrawnier, and had messy, unkempt hair, and droopy, sickly eyes. He hardly looked like Lumiere at all.
“My heavens, what have you done to yourself?” Cogsworth gasped, pushing the door all the way open and walking in. “This is madness!” he exclaimed.
“Is it now? I hardly believe it myself.” Lumiere said with less enthusiasm than a snail following a path. “The room does need some cleaning up.” The Frenchman scratched the back of his neck, yawning.
“No, no, no!” Cogsworth shouted, forcing Lumiere to sit back on the bed. “I mean you! Have you seen yourself lately? You look like a vagabond!”
“Do I?” Lumiere asked, rubbing his eye. Cogsworth barred his teeth and made a hissing sound to cool his temper.
“What is wrong with you?!” Get your act together! Get cleaned up, and for heaven’s sake, eat some food before you starve to death!”
“What’s ze point?” the despairing man asked sadly, “She’s never coming back.” he sighed, shoulders slumped and his head hanging low. Cogsworth was reminded of a puppet without strings.
“Lumiere…this has to stop. You’ll kill yourself if you keep this up.” Cogsworth said gently, trying to help his friend, though nothing seemed to be working. Then he got an idea. “You know, I don’t care how down in the dumps you are, chap, but I’m bringing you some lunch right now. And you will eat it, even if I have to force it down for you!” and with that, the butler left the room.
Lumiere sighed and just curled back up on the bed. Yes, he was hungry, but he felt he couldn’t stomach the food at the moment. Closing his eyes, he tried to catch a quick doze, but her face kept appearing under his eyelids. Haunting was her face and it left the poor man shaking with grief. “Ohhhh….ma amour…what did I do?” he cried, hidings his face in his hands.
Coming back only fifteen minutes later, Cogsworth found what might have been Lumiere only a few days ago, bundled in a heap on the bed. Sympathy was written all over his face as he looked at his broken friend. “I brought the food.” Cogsworth said gently.
“I…can’t eat it right now, Cogs…” Lumiere sniffed, hugging onto a feathered pillow. Cogsworth stiffened at the sound of his voice and felt his stomach tighten. It was as if Lumiere was a boy again and they went back in time to where his parents died in a fire. That was the only time before now Cogsworth had ever seen him cry. He tried to keep his voice steady for Lumiere’s sake.
“It’ll be alright, ‘ol chap…” he said, forcing a smile, though he knew Lumiere could not see it.
“How do you know? I’ve lost my goddess…the love of my life to some farm boy nobody even knows!” Lumiere said bitterly, shocking the former enchanted grandfather clock. The tone was very much unlike him. Then there was a shudder and a stifled sob, “I’m sorry….I didn’t men to snap at you…” Lumiere said warily.
“I know, my friend.” Cogsworth said, setting the food trey on the night stand. “You really should eat, or you’ll get ill.”
“I don’t think I’ll be able to…hold it down…” Lumiere forced himself to sit up, and he brushed the messy light brown bangs from his sickly  and colorless eyes. Judging by his pale complexion, Cogsworth agreed.
“You need sleep more than anything.” he instructed, taking a seat on the bed next to Lumiere. Lumiere looked at the butler with the saddest eyes.
“I can’t do zat either….I see her…all ze time…” his voice trailed off with tremors and this time Cogsworth did put a comforting arm around his shoulders.
“There, there. This will all pass with time. Babette wasn’t the only girl that left you in the end.” Most people would have never said that to someone grieving over heartbreak, but Cogsworth knew Lumiere better than most people.
“True…” Lumiere smiled weakly. ‘It’s a start,’ Cogsworth thought, “But Fifi was different…I really thought she would be the one…to have our own family…” Tears formed in his eyes again, but he tried to hide his face from view.
“Things don’t always turn out like you want them to. I’m sorry this happened to you, old friend, but you have to move on.” Cogsworth explained. Lumiere’s eyes were half shut and he leaned his tired body against Cogsworth. “Eh…don’t get too comfortable, Lum-” he stopped, realizing the former candelabra had fallen asleep. Sighing, Cogsworth pulled the covers down on the ed and placed Lumiere under them.
“Sleep well, my friend.” Cogsworth whispered, taking the trey back with his as he walked out and closed the door. Lumiere would be sleeping for quite some time now. Perhaps things would start to lookup for them both.
